Responsibilities included oversight of clinical quality and safety, risk management, self-insurance programs, hospital accreditation, occupational health. Member of system Executive Council, responsible for oversight of system strategic planning and operations; Directly involved in system leadership of following areas: supply chain management, physician integration activities, graduate education, physician leadership development, clinical informatics strategies, and operational excellence.
Accomplishments:
- Reorganized and expanded department of clinical excellence & safety
- Created new system oversight structure for clinical quality and safety
- Implemented a system wide quality strategic plan that has resulted in the system performance in achieving CMS core measures reaching the top 10% in the country.
- Created a series of “affinity groups” , consisting of clinician leaders who have advanced the system’s spread and adoption of best practices in cardiovascular surgery, critical care, oncology, perinatal safety, graduate medical education.
- Developed and implemented a grants program that has successfully stimulated clinical innovation and spread of that innovation across the system.
- Oversaw a hospital accreditation program that has achieved 100% success in Joint Commission accreditation
- Significantly advanced the development of a culture of safety across the system
- With the system CNO, advanced the development of palliative care across the system.
- Lead the implementation of a data-mining pharmacy database across the system that has resulted in savings of over $1 million per month and avoidance of many serious medication errors (70 in the first 4 months of use) .
- Lead the evaluation and implementation of a comprehensive data warehouse (Amalga) for the system.
- Conceived of and lead the development of an annual learning event to convene clinician leaders from across the system to promote the spread of key quality initiatives.
- Actively developed and coached 5 physician leaders across the system.
- Helped develop and lead a quality collaborative project among 22 Catholic Health systems—focused on 3 areas: mortality reduction, readmission reduction, expansion of palliative care.
