Chief, education and research (CHW), Vice President of Academic Medical Affairs (St Mary’s) , 12/93-6/98
Oversaw education programs, ambulatory care clinics and quality improvement efforts for St Mary’s and coordinated system wide Graduate education and research efforts for CHW .
- Participated in the growth of CHW from a 17 hospital system to a 48 hospital system (It has since reduced in size) : was a member of the outreach team that communicated with potential hospital acquisitions.
- Turned the medicine residency around—taking it from probationary status to full accreditation
- Was part of a 4-physician team that developed the first system wide quality improvement efforts.
- Recruited new faculty that became the foundation for the hospitalist service for St. Mary’s
- Developed strategic plan for graduate medical education for the system.
- Performed cost-benefit analysis for GME at St. Mary’s demonstrating that the program was a net benefit to the hospital
- Started first research program at St. Mary’s—successfully recruited investigator that generated first patent for the organization.
- Ran a successful outpatient, multi-specialty clinic that served the poor and uninsured of San Francisco—one of the largest of its kind in the city.
- Appointed as Commissioner of Public Health of San Francisco—part of the governing body for the county Hospital and all public health activities in the county.
